Russells helps the first of new homes pass the finish line

Enjoying the races from the comfort of your own balcony could be a reality for some homebuyers as a housing development at Newbury Racecourse completes its first phase.

As part of a joint venture between David Wilson Homes and Newbury Racecourse, the development is part of West Berkshire Council’s Core Strategy Development Plan Document where the main focus for housing growth has been centred around Newbury, West Berkshire.

The eastern side of the racecourse will have 708 homes, of which 352 will be houses. The overall project will see 1500 homes built, providing homebuyers with a unique living experience in an exclusive location, while still being in close proximity to Newbury’s town centre. The scheme follows a wider development programme which saw apartments and houses built in the central and western part of the racecourse two years ago.

With the development viewable from the racecourse, each home has been designed to the highest standard to ensure it was aesthetically pleasing to the homebuyer and visitors to Newbury Racecourse.

An important part of this design was the roof as it can make up 40 per cent of the building’s façade, having an important impact on the overall design. Therefore, David Wilson Homes was required to work closely with leading roofing manufacturer, Russell Roof Tiles to achieve the right look of the roof.

Russell Roof Tiles supplied 200,000 of its new ‘Bute’ roof tiles in cottage red to reflect the other roofs at the racecourse and in Newbury.

Bute tiles form part of Russell’s Natural Range of products – an expanding selection of thinner leading edge interlocking concrete tiles. When laid, the tile gives the appearance of a small format tile or traditional plain tile with the commercial benefit of a larger format tile.

Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles said: “We are delighted to have been appointed to help with such a prestigious and unique housing development and it is another great example of our continued success in the South.

“Despite only launching last year, our Bute tiles are proving popular among contractors who want the appearance of natural slate, clay or stone for a fraction of the price. It is a long-life, durable product and require minimal maintenance once installed and the versatility of concrete allows for an authentic slate or clay effect roof tile with the benefits of offering greater strength.”

Russell Roof Tiles is a leading independent roof tile manufacturer providing products for leading UK house builders and high-profile social housing and commercial projects, where sustainability and eco-credentials are of the utmost priority.
