Britain has built the largest number of new homes since the global financial crisis, detailed in recent figures. A net 189,650 new homes were created in the 12 months to March, up 11 per cent from the same period a year earlier.
Also experiencing an increase in year-on-year figures is Barratt Developments, who completed 17,319 plots in the year ending June 2016. David Wilson Homes (part of Barratt Developments) in the East Midlands, is adding to those numbers and is currently on course to deliver a total of 300 brand new 2, 3, 4 & 5 bedroom homes and bungalows as part of its Forest Chase development in the up and coming area of Leicester Forest East.
The new homes have been designed to replicate the look of similar housing in the area. Roofing is an important factor to consider, with a pitched roof making up to 40 per cent of a home’s façade, it has a major impact on the overall aesthetic.
Russell Roof Tiles Lothian in slate grey and cottage red was specified, to reflect the slate and clay roofs of other local housing. Lothian tiles form part of Russell’s Natural Range of products – an expanding selection of thinner leading edge interlocking concrete tiles that have the appearance of natural slate, stone and clay.
Clay tiles are often seen as a more environmentally friendly product, as opposed to concrete, but when looking at the whole manufacturing process and comparing the entire process concrete is in reality more sustainable – a key factor in housebuilding.
Concrete tiles have a much lower embodied carbon than those of clay as well. This means that clay tiles require a greater energy input throughout their production process before the final product is compete. Although cement does have a high carbon embodiment, it typically represents less than 20 per cent of the weight of the tile composition. The remainder of the materials used in production are “natural” products.
Building work began on the David Wilson Homes Forest Chase in 2015 and is expected to continue up until 2018. It is one of several projects that David Wilson Homes delivering in Leicestershire, providing impressive family housing, built to the highest design specifications, for house-hunters wanting to move to the area.
Russell Roof Tiles supplies roof tiles for private and social housing, as well as developments which are designed to provide extra care facilities to residents. The latest family homes in Leicester will provide a much-needed boost to the number of new homes in the area, as the national demand for housing continues to be at an all-time high.
